Hey guys just posting to see if there are any silat practitioners on the forum,

i have been studying Silat under Alving Guinanno for the past year and has been trained by Pendekar Steve Benitez (who is probably thebest martial artist in the world)

Just wondering who and what styles you practice if any of you guys hSoere do.

If you want to check out what we do check out Silat Buka lingkaran on Youtube.

i love martial arts but to me silat is the most deadly as it hasn't been sanitised for sport and is brutal tough and designed toend a fight quickly.

We were training with some BJJ guys and they were blown away at how we train and how we are able to get out of the locks that in BJJ would result in the end of a fight

Sorry to sould like a fan boy but I've done karate, MMA and Kickboxing and by far silat is the hardesttraining I've done and is themost dynamic even the footowrk is econd to none

Checkitout guys I doubt you will be dissapointed

cheers

What do you make of Jon Jones Ed001? The best the sport has ever seen? Is he beatable in the division or do you think the only way he can be beat is making the step up to Heavyweight and taking on someone like Dos Santos?

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - he is a class apart, in his division. I don't see anyone out there to touch him at that particular weight class. I do think the step to heavyweight might be a bit much for him, but he has got the skill and the reach to keep heavy hitters out of reach. I still think he would be a top contender at heavyweight, just not miles ahead, like he is at the moment. Jones is certainly the best I have seen compete, you can see how the sport is evolving and fighters are becoming more complete and developed these days. All the stuff Bruce Lee was talking about back in the 60s and 70s is being shown to be correct in the modern era. Even though the sport was designed to be weighted in favour of the grappler to showcase BJJ (hence the takedowns scoring without doing actual damage to an opponent), the likes of Jon Jones are showing that the best fighters are those that can strike and grapple. It helps if you have his physicality on your side, his height, reach and strength are a massive advantage he is able to utilise so well. Pound for pound, he has to be the best there is, and the best there ever has been, in the UFC. It will be interesting to see how he keeps himself motivated, similar to Ronda Rousey as well for that matter, when you are that much better than your opponent it is easy to become complacent. I think he might need to make that step up in weight class soon, or lose his edge.}

(0)

Knocked it out of the park again Merlin, agree with the lot. I remember when he first took the belt off Shogun he said that he had a plan for what he wanted to do in the sport, and when he turns 25 he wanted too move up to Heavyweight. Both his brothers are absolute brick walls, so the weight isn't an issue, and I'm sure he probably walks around closer to 220 then 205. I think now he has his heart set on smashing the record for most defences of the belt an then will make the move. It's almost unfair that he has that reach and size advantage over everyone in LH. I remember writing him off before the Shogun fight due to inexperience and he just bullied Shogun. It was obvious then he was a special talent and he has developed so much over the last 3 years. The angles he throws his elbows is ridiculous.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - good point on the elbows, especially considering the one 'loss' on his record was because he threw an elbow from an angle that is outlawed in UFC. I have to agree with Joe Rogan on the ridiculous nature of that decision by the people that award the UFC its license! So long as he keeps his focus, Jones will waltz through the defences, easily break the record and then step up, if you are right. Saying he is 220 when he walks around is a lot different from fighting at 220 though! A lot of the weight difference is merely water and is put back on between weigh in and fight anyway. He would need to increase muscle mass, though I don't really see it as a problem, you only have to look at Overeem to see it can be done. That guy has turned into a monster, build-wise, now, just a shame he lost his focus as he would have had a great shot at the title on his ability.
I was just thinking back to the Shogun fight then, it is hard to believe that we all thought it was going to be tough for Jones back then. Looking at him now, you wouldn't even think it would be a fair fight!}

(0)
(0)

I remember that fight with Matt Hamill, absolute disgrace. Jones was absolutely punishing him standing up, took him down and unleashed from Hamills guard with about 10 elbows. Red pulled him off, Jones thought he had won and it gets called a DQ.

Shogun was asked if he wanted another shot, said no. Same with Lyoto Macheda. Two fighters that were regarded as the best in the world, and they didn't want to go near him. Says a lot about his strength and ability. It's easy to say he looks like the best ever, but when two people who were in the same category don't want another crack, it speaks volumes.

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - I think that sums it up perfectly, no one would turn down a shot at the world title if they thought they had a chance.}

Jones moves up to HW and gets knocked out by a Big Country overhand right, what a sight that would be.

Alrite chaps.

I want to start Mixed Martial Arts. However I don't know which. I used to box for the army and I was good at that but boxing is pretty crap. i'm good at chocking people out and can get anybody to the floor. What do you think? {Ed001's Note - gain a base in one that suits you, then add to that by working on others. The best fighters, and Bruce Lee for that matter, all began with a good grounding in one particular style, then looked to learn other arts to fix weaknesses in their style. If you are a decent boxer, then look to an art such as Judo or Jiu-Jitsu (Brazilian or otherwise), but boxing is far from crap, just not well rounded enough. You will obviously need to develop kicks, Muay Thai would be useful, as that would also help with elbows and knees too.}

(0)
(0)

Cheers Ed {Ed001's Note - I would suggest sticking with boxing too, the footwork involved is a very useful art to learn. To cite Bruce Lee again, it was boxing that he based his footwork on, to a large degree.}

(0)

Silat has tehbest footwork of any martial art. Check out Silat Buka Lingkaran on youtube

Don't know what everyone else thought, but that was one of the worst cards I've had to sit through. Never shelling out $50 for a GSP fight again. Far too predictable and non enjoyable. No longer trains stand up, just take down and transitions. He is a superb wrestler but just not an entertaining fighter anymore. The Condit fight was the only good one on the card. Cote winning in Canada after being assaulted for three rounds just shows the control Dana and Lorenzo have in deciding fights. It doesn't rest with the judges at all. GSP doesn't fight outside of Canada. It's no surprise. Utterly disappointed. {Ed001's Note - you have to pay in Oz? Wow, we get them free on ESPN, the full UFC package is shown live on there. Mind, you do have to subscribe to the channel, so it's not really free. It still has my bugbear, adverts on a subscription channel, which really annoys me! If I am paying to subscribe I shouldn't have to sit through bleeding adverts as well. It should be illegal to do both, either have subscribers or advertisers, but not both.}

Melbourne CFC

(0)
(0)

Yes mate. Mainevent PayPerView. You have to pay a subscription to Foxtel ($100 odd a month) and then shell out $50 on top to watch a Mainevent UFC and Boxing card. It's a money pit.

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - it is a con.}

(0)
(0)

Have to agree with you about the gsp fight all his fights are turning into wrestling matches. the hendricks v condit fight was much better {Ed001's Note - do you get the Prelim bouts on the PPV card Melbourne? The best bouts were on there, if you ask me.}

(0)
(0)

Yes mate, we get them for free on Fuel TV as part of the foxtel package. There were some solid fights on that. The first one was a good'un. Can't recall the names but the bloke should have had the other with an arm bar early on, didn't roll with him and lost it solely down to poor technique, the other bloke got up and only threw lefts after that as his right arm was rooted. Managed to knock the bloke as well solely with his left, and he wasn't a southpaw. Good fight. I'm looking forward to Jones dominating Sonnen on the next main card. Can't stand Chael.

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - that was a good fight, two TKD fighters, hence the lack of technique on the grappling, probably still learning that part. It was a much more exciting package than the main event.}

(0)
(1)

That was the thing though mate, the bloke that had the armbar locked in and didn't roll with the bloke is a purple bought and had previously done very well in BJJ tournaments. I was dumbfounded how he didn't roll with him. The big stage may have gotten to him, as I'm sure it does with many. I'm lucky that one of the boys I watch it with each month is a black belt BJJ instructor. He is an absolute brick wall and a flat out Greek, so very comedic. It gives you a great insight into the technical aspect when you watch the cards with someone who knows a lot about the ground game.

I agree the prelims were the best part of that card. I recommend keeping an eye out for Mark Hunt when he fights Junior Dos Santos in a couple months. Will be a bloodbath, and the Aussie has more of a chance then he will be given credit for.

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - that should be a good fight, I am looking forward to Bigfoot getting a title shot too. I enjoyed seeing him take Overeem down a peg or two. Good as Overeem is, his arrogance was always going to lead to him getting beaten by a powerhouse like Bigfoot.}

(0)
(1)

Yeah Overeem was far too arrogant in that one mate. Gave Bigfoot no respect standing up and dropped his hands for about 2 rounds. It was only going to take a good punch from Silva to rock Overeem and he put him away in style. Valesquez is a completely different kettle on fish. don't know how much you've seen of him but he will destroy Big Foot in the first IMO. His boxing is second to none. He won't underestimate big foot either.

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - I agree, but I am just looking forward to seeing Bigfoot get a well earned shot.}

(0)
(1)

Yeah ever since he took out Fedor, I've always wanted him to get a shot. He has been around a while, and fought a lot of big fights, without much luck. Anyway, I'm off to bed. Nice chatting as always Merlin.

Melbourne CFC {Ed001's Note - take care mate, have a good week.}

Hi ed, and happy new year to you all.

Which if any wwe wrestlers do you think could make the transition from wwe to UFC if any at all? And likewise do you foresee any going in the other direction once there time is up at UFC.

All the best everyone {Ed001's Note - I don't really know enough about the WWE wrestlers to comment on it, but Brock Lesnar proved it is possible.}

(0)
(0)

I think with a bit of training wade barret could possibly make the transition as he was a legitimate bare knuckle boxer across europe

(0)
(0)

Bare knuckle boxing is incomparable to MMA. Brock realised when he went up against a big, strong, technical boxer (Valesquez) or a top class BJJ exponent (Frank Mirr) he was in massive trouble. He only won the title because he could smash an old Randy Couture who he was much bigger than and Randy didn't have a bjj ground base. He was a top wrestler and good boxer, but Brocks size was too much due to his wrestling base aswell. No professional WWE fighter could hold a candle to the blokes involved in MMA now, without Atleast 3 years of flat stick training. Not just stand up, but grappling defence (which most are versed in), BJJ defence and offence (working off their back aswell as being in others guards).

Even training for 3 years, coming up against someone who has been training for a decade plus is a massive disadvantage and one I don't think any wrestler (WWE) will ever be able to overcome.

(2)

Except for the fact he couldn't take a punch as every time he got caught by a heavyweight he got wobbled and had to clinch his stand up was terrible

Who wouldn't what Velasquez and overeem arguably the best heavyweights of all time come on alistair is world wide known for his striking and Velasquez is great as well

Cmon George, put Condit down in the first and shut them all up

cozinoz

(2)
(0)

In my opinion coz, it will be whether George wants to finish him or early, or as usual prove a point and dominate him for 5 rounds. He hasn't been in the octagon for a while, so I'm going for a 2nd round stoppage.

anderson silva is a legend but they gotta match him up with john jones . that fight would be bigger than mayweather v pacqiuo

(3)
(2)

Silva is a true legend best theres ever been but i still think he would lose to jones, bones wouldnt stand with him and fear being ko'd so it would be a ground game with more change a tko than submission but hey let it happen!

(1)
(1)

This fight wont happen,silva said after the bonnar fight that he wont stay at lhw and he only agreed to the bonnar fight to save the card,they are both on record saying they wouldnt fight each other anyway

(0)

Would see Jones winning as he shows no fear and his elbows would prove the difference

can an editor or anyone clear up for me who is the pound for pound king in mma is it silva or jones because everywhere i look it differs

curt {Ed001's Note - people could only give their opinion, it is impossible to give a definitive answer.}

(0)
(0)

Ah right fair enough 001 is there no official pound for pound ranking then ?

id have to go for silva just over jones

curt {Ed001's Note - you can't really do one to be honest, it is all about opinions, I would choose Silva because he has a better attitude than Jones. In the long run, it will be that which costs Jones.}

(0)
(0)

Yer thats true

silva is just a beast aswel

jon jones needs to mature a hell of alot he become champion too young and it just fuelled his ego majorly

best line hes ever used is fans shouldnt have replica belts because they have not won anything to earn them ...........

(Ed039's Note - So Jones it has been decided will go against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152, Machida kacked it and Jones doesnt want Sonnen, Jones should be too young and skilful for Belfort, who is returning for his first match back in the Light Heavyweight Division as well. Also got Bisping v Spann but all in all another uninspiring PPV card, but I suppose I will watch it, whats your views guys?)

Why can't I find John jones vs Henderson fight on espn on sat night ????

(0)
(0)

Been cancelled due to hendo pickin up an injury. machieda asked to step in but turned it down because not enough time to train for championship fight, which is understandable. Chael Sonnen said he would fight but Jones turned it down. come to your own conclussion on that.

bridgeford upper {Ed039's Note - Easy way out for Jones, he knows Sonnen would cause him serious problems! This would have been the fight Dana wanted as it may have potentially led to Sonnen and Forrest griffin title fight in December which is a real man event fight and would sell PPVs)

(1)
(1)

Henderson got injured, jones would not accept chael sonnen to fight instead so the whole night was cancelled. Being champ jones should have open to fight anyone.

(1)
(0)

Jones pooned it, big time.

(1)

I doubt frank jackson would of let jbj fight some one of sonnens calibre at such short notice. the mans a cock but he sure can fight. jbj to loose a lot of repect from other fighters and fans cus of this imo.

(Ed039's Note - So guys who is next for Silva? Can anyone beat him? Anybody else disappointed with the card for UFC 149?)

(1)
(1)

Itll be Lombard/Boetsch winner unless Boetsch wins. Lombards the man for the job in terms of name value and if he beats Boetsch, striking while the iron's hot.

Plenty of no.1 contender fights in the pipeline - Bisping/Stann official for UFC 152; Belfort/Belcher rumoured, likely at UFC 153 in Oct; Chris Weidman is in the lurch, after murdering Mark Munoz he needs one more big win, but nobody available.

UFC 149 - shocking card if you're a N.American fan paying $60, something thats becoming a worrying trend.

2-3 very meaningful fights though, and being a Brit viewers I use ESPN so cant complain.

A good card from the weekend guys, an excellent performance from Nate Diaz, a controversial decision going the way of Hendricks (I had it Koscheck), Belcher looked awesome as did the two Johnson's Lavar and Michael.

Our home talent John Hathaway put on a great display and fair play to Krauss he can take some shots. Was very surprised how dominating Bermudez was against 'The Scarecrow' a good effort against all odds by Vermola who was massive underdog.

Looking forward to the next card now where I thoroughly expect Dustin Poirier to put himself in the title frame.

thought he meant he had murdered someone lol

Depends how drunk he was

it shouldnt be done but if you can control your driving its not the worst thing in the world

curt {Ed001's Note - that is complete nonsense. A drunk driver is in charge of a deadly weapon with their faculties only half working. Jones dominated rashard. In a whole nother universe to any other light heavy! reckon could have finished him in 2nd, 3rd or 4th but wanted to just toy with him for 5! cannot wait til he hits 25yo buts 10kg on and wins the heavyweight title. That 22yo canadian looks a beast! Melbourne CFC

(2)
(4)

Rory MacDonald the 22yr old. I cant believe how he absolutely dominated our English guy. Che is a very strong competitor and very underrated. Macdonald made him look poor. The other young McDonald aswell took Torres out with ease! Promising futures for them both. Also like to mention big ben rothwell, took a good couple of punches, and threw completely through them to put Schaub flat on his back fighting nothing but air! How lean did he look too! HW division looks awesome, and like you, i cannot wait for JJ to make the step up as most of the top HWs are still relatively young! Strabs

Jon Jones is an awesome athlete but he didn't toy with Rashad, Suga is also a helluva fighter and if Jones could have finished him he would have but he couldn't. That said he completely dominated and deserved his win, I think he'll despatch Henderson with ease and Evans will rematch Machida and beat him to set up Jones v Evans 2.

Ed is this page always so quiet mate ? I find that strange, I've taken it upon myself to spread the word because the American sites are... Well, full of Americans so that says it all really ! So I'm away back on the the now to get the Brits to come on this one!
Paul(shogun) {Ed007's Note - It's not the busiest of our sites Paul but it is relatively new compared to the others.}

WTF man, what is overeem playing at ? He's ruined the event and should never fight in the UFC again, is Dana White a f£cking person putting his trust in a guy who CLEARLY uses PEDs, Jesus man , shogun smashed him then all of a sudden he turns in to a Greek god , as for Hendo saying he'll fight Cigano ? Settle down dan ! If ya were to scared to fight machida imagine what JDS will do to ya !

I am looking at learning panantukan (filipino boxing) in the northants/leicester area. Please only respond with classes that involve this art and no others, I dont want to do JKD, MMA, JU jitsu or Muay Thai. No disrespect to these arts

UFC 146 looks like a gd card! Think dos santos vs overeem wil b gd! Bigfoot silva vs Roy nelson big county's last fight at heavyweight! First fight in ufc for bigfoot afta ko of fedor then a loss to Cormier who is 9-0.Mir vs valasquez will b gd to! But most of All a want dan the outlaw to get a win! Has been training with gsp and other gr8 fighters tryin to improve and hopefully wil c him ko bang Ludwig! think dos santos by ko. Mir by submission. Bigfoot tko. And dan by tko! Any1 agree?

Don't know if Dos Santos can KO Overeem, i can see that one going the distance but it's heavyweight so you never know. I'm with you on Dan Hardy he needs this win big time, really hope he gets it. Can't wait to see Paul Sass fight again, he is deadly on the ground.

Do santos has the power to ko anyone in the division, it will be a good fight though, i think junior for a 2nd round ko, valasquez v Mir will be beasting, both good wrestlers an Mir is lethal at subs, if the fight stays standing Cain for me, again 2nd round ko , big country could be in a bit of trouble, is hardy on the main card im sure I seen 4-5 all HW
